The Real Princess is an illustration for Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross. It was published for the Daily Telegraph newspaper by Hodder and Stoughton to raise funds for the French Red Cross (Croix Rouge Française) by the Comité de Londres (Committee in London) under the patronage of H.M. Queen Alexandra, consort of Britain's King Edward VII. Queen Alexandra was born Princess Alexandra Caroline Mary Charlotte Louisa Julia on December 1, 1844. She was the granddaughter of the king of Denmark. At 16, she won the hand of the Prince Albert Edward, heir to the throne of England. She became Queen Consort in 1901 upon the death of her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria. During her time as Queen she established The Red Cross.
